Summaries of Chapters 1-3
Chapter 1-
Chapter one talks about how Robert, the main character, has very strange dreams. It also talks about how the dreams are the same every night. One of the reoccurring dreams Robert has is on about how he gets a racing bike. Another one is how he is eaten by a fish. All of a sudden he has different dream. This dream had the number devil and a meadow with grass that grew to the sky. The number devil is a little old man. The number devil starts to teach Robert about mathematics. He started with the number one.

The number devil tends to loose his patience and temper when Robert doesn't get something right. The number devil also teaches Robert how to multiply. He also teaches him how to divide using a large stick of gum. The chapter ends with the number devil loosing his temper and exploding.

Chapter 2-
Chapter two begins with Robert sliding down a slide. when he come o the end of the slide he lands on a bed of moss. when he looked up he saw the number devil. and he saw that that wasn't an actual slide he slid down. it was a tree trunk ad they were in a forest of trees that looked like large ones. In this chapter the number devil teaches Robert about the number zero. The number devil also teaches him about roman numerals.

The number devil also teaches Robert how to subtract. He also teaches Robert how to do exponents. the method the number devil uses is called hopping. chapter two ends with the number devil getting mad because Robert said that he didn't need the him anymore.

Chapter 3-
Chapter three starts with Robert thinking about the number devil, and how he looks forward to dreaming of him. Robert falls asleep and then wakes up in a cave. the number devil teaches him how to divide. he tells him it is like multiplying but in reverse. He also teaches Robert that you can't divide by zero. He teaches Robert that some numbers are "prima donnas" meaning that can't be divided evenly. He also teaches Robert that numbers that can divide evenly are called "the garden variety."
